Whether you want to play the classics or be the keyboard player for a blues band, Cindy's piano lessons will get you there!
For beginner and intermediate level students wishing to learn to play piano through music reading, Cindy uses the Faber library of teaching materials. This extensive library has piano music and materials suited for beginners from age 4 through adult, which covers all aspects of playing: technique development, music theory, artistry in playing. For more advanced students, depending on their interest and goals, Cindy chooses from a wide range of piano music: standard piano classics, modern piano masters, piano arrangements of jazz and popular music. Along with piano playing by music reading, Cindy introduces playing by chord, by ear, and improvisation playing, and incorporates these elements according to student interest.
For students wishing to play by ear and/or chord voicings, Cindy begins with simple chord theory, which is expanded to more advance chord voicings as the student progresses. Cindy uses a combination of teaching aids: chord charts, piano harmonization and "licks" books and online materials geared to the student's style of interest (jazz, blues, pop, etc.), play along apps (iPhone and android), recordings of student's favorite artist and lesson and practice recordings.
Students have opportunites to perform in two recitals each year (November and April) at the Historic Thomas Center. Cindy's music studio and intimate performance space is available to students for presenting informal showcases and solo recitals for family and friends. (For details click here.)
Cindy also provides a variety of fun-filled, small group music events where students of similar ages, ability levels and interests come together to play music for and/or with one another. (See "Music Just for Us").
Students with an interest in improvisation have an opportunity to play improv with others in Cindy"s "Music Outside the Box" workshops. Participants of these workshops will be invited to play with Cindy's professional improv ensemble, "Without a Net", at Gainesville ArtWalks and at other area venues.
Cindy is a member of several local, state and national teaching organizations which provide student competition opportunities for any students who wish to participate in adjudicated events.
